Wilde argues that undercapitalism the majority of people spoil their lives by anunhealthy and exaggerated altruism-are forced, indeed, soto spoil them: instead of realizing their true talents, theywaste their time solving the social problems caused bycapitalism, without taking their common cause away. Thus,caring people seriously and very sentimentally setthemselves to the task of remedying the evils that they seein poverty, but their remedies do not cure the disease: Theymerely prolong it because, the proper aim is to try andreconstruct society on such a basis that poverty will beimpossible.
